Adebisi Bamidele Akande, popularly known as Chief Bisi Akande, was born on 16 January 1939 in Ila Orangun in present day Osun State. He began his education at the Native Authority School in Oke Aloyin in Ila Orangun where he studied from 1946 to 1952 before proceeding to Methodist School in Ode Idanre in 1953.
By 1957 he enrolled at the Divisional Teachers’ Training College in Ile Ife where he earned his Grade Three Teacher’s Certificate. He later taught in several towns across today’s Osun, Kwara and Ogun States. During this period he furthered his studies through correspondence courses in accountancy and management which widened his administrative and professional competence.
Early Career in the Private Sector
In August 1963, Akande joined British Petroleum Nigeria as a management trainee in the Finance and Accounts Department. Over the following years, he rose steadily through the ranks until he became Manager of Systems and Computer Services in 1979. His work in financial systems and administrative organization helped build the skills that later made him a respected public administrator.

Entry into Public Service
With the return of civilian rule in 1979, Akande was appointed Secretary to the Government of the old Oyo State. In November 1982 he became Deputy Governor under Governor Bola Ige following the resignation of the previous deputy. He served in this position until the military coup of 1983 which ended the Second Republic.
Before his executive roles, Akande had been elected in 1977 to represent Ila and Odo Otin in the Constituent Assembly that drafted the 1979 Constitution. His participation gave him national visibility and placed him among the emerging voices in progressive Nigerian politics.
Governor of Osun State
In 1999, at the return of democracy, Akande contested and won the Osun State governorship election under the Alliance for Democracy. He governed from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2003. His administration became known for its financial discipline and firm approach to restructuring the state’s public service.
His government implemented significant workforce rationalization and in 2001 dissolved the Osun State Council of Obas and Chiefs on the grounds of administrative efficiency and cost management. These actions reflected his leadership style which was built on modest governance and the elimination of waste.
Although the firm measures earned him both praise and criticism, his tenure remains one of the most referenced examples of disciplined state administration in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. In the 2003 election he was defeated by Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
Role in National Political Development
After leaving office as governor, Akande continued to play a central role in Nigeria’s political evolution. He served as National Chairman of the Alliance for Democracy and later became a founding leader in the political realignments that produced the Action Congress, the Action Congress of Nigeria and eventually the All Progressives Congress.
In June 2013 he was appointed the first Interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress shortly after its landmark merger. His leadership helped stabilize the emerging party during its foundational stage and contributed significantly to the opposition movement that later won the 2015 presidential election.

Detention and Personal Resolve
Following the 1983 military coup, Akande was among the political leaders detained by the new regime. His military court sentence was lengthy but he later regained his freedom. His experience during this period strengthened his reputation as a man of discipline whose integrity remained intact even under duress.
Legacy, Influence and Statesmanship
Across Nigeria, Chief Bisi Akande is widely regarded as an elder statesman whose political career is characterized by modesty, candour and unwavering principles. Over the decades he has mentored younger politicians and consistently spoken in favour of constitutional restructuring, fiscal responsibility and good governance.
His life embodies the values of service and simplicity. His leadership journey from teacher to governor and from party organizer to national statesman reflects a commitment to public duty rather than personal gain.
