Background

The Rise of Pentecostal Christianity in Nigeria

Pentecostalism in Nigeria has experienced rapid growth since the late twentieth century, marked by charismatic worship, evangelism, and the establishment of extensive church networks. These movements became influential social and spiritual forces, with many leaders founding churches that grew into national and international institutions.

Bishop David Olaniyi Oyedepo

David Oyedepo was born on 27 September 1954 in Omu-Aran, Kwara State, Nigeria. He is the founder and presiding bishop of Living Faith Church Worldwide, also known as Winners’ Chapel, which was formally established on 2 May 1981 following a reported spiritual vision in May 1981, aimed at liberating people from all oppression through the preaching of the Word of Faith.

The church, initially starting in Ilesa, Osun State, later established its headquarters at Canaanland, Ota, Ogun State, which houses the Faith Tabernacle, one of the largest church auditoriums in the world. Living Faith Church Worldwide has developed a global network of congregations and ministries, spreading across multiple countries.

Oyedepo also established prominent educational institutions, including Covenant University in Ota and Landmark University in Omu-Aran, providing tertiary education with a focus on leadership, moral development, and academic excellence .

Bishop Francis Olubowale Aderibigbe Oke

Francis Wale Oke was born on 8 September 1956 in Oyo State. He is the founder and presiding bishop of Sword of the Spirit Ministries, also known as Christ Life Church, which was established in 1983 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Oke’s ministry grew from a small fellowship into an established international church network, with congregations in multiple countries. In March 2021, he was elected President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), a prominent national body representing Pentecostal and charismatic churches. He was re-elected in February 2025, reaffirming his leadership among Nigerian Pentecostal leaders.

Oke also serves as Chancellor of Precious Cornerstone University, a private university based in Ibadan, which emphasises theological education, leadership training, and community development.

Institutional Development

Living Faith Church Worldwide

Under Oyedepo’s leadership, Living Faith Church Worldwide has become one of the largest Pentecostal denominations in Nigeria, operating a global network of churches. Its headquarters, Canaanland, accommodates both religious services and educational programmes, including Bible training and leadership development initiatives.

The church’s educational institutions, Covenant University and Landmark University, contribute significantly to Nigerian higher education, combining academic training with Christian values, ethical leadership, and entrepreneurial skill development.

Sword of the Spirit Ministries

Sword of the Spirit Ministries expanded from fellowship gatherings into a recognised church network, with multiple congregations in Nigeria and abroad. The ministry emphasises evangelism, teaching programmes, and leadership training, with Oke playing a pivotal role in shaping Pentecostal networks nationally through the PFN.
