The Emir of Katsina Locomotive was one of the most distinctive machines to appear on Nigeria’s railway during the 1930s. Photographs in the E. H. Duckworth Photograph Collection at Northwestern University identify the enormous articulated steam engine as Nigerian Railway No. 502, “Emir of Katsina”, and date several views of it to 5 March 1936.
Its importance goes beyond its imposing appearance. No. 502 belonged to the 501 Class of Beyer-Garratt locomotives introduced when the Nigerian railway administration needed powerful engines capable of handling substantial loads while operating over infrastructure that imposed limitations on axle weight.
The locomotive also carried a name rooted in one of northern Nigeria’s most important traditional institutions. At the time it was photographed, Muhammadu Dikko was Emir of Katsina. Yet the machine’s history also belongs to the African railway workers who drove, fired, repaired and maintained locomotives across an expanding colonial transport network.
Nigeria’s Railway Network in the 1930s
By 1938, the Nigerian Railway had approximately 1,900 route miles of single track, increasing to 2,184 miles when sidings were included. Its principal lines used the 3 feet 6 inches, or 1,067 millimetre, gauge.
The railway administration divided the network into Western, Northern and Eastern districts. The Western District extended from Lagos to Jebba on the River Niger. The Northern District continued from Jebba towards Nguru and incorporated important branch lines, while the Eastern District extended from Kaduna Junction to Port Harcourt.
The scale of railway activity was considerable. In 1938, the system carried more than seven million passengers, while goods traffic, including railway materials and livestock, totalled more than 880,000 tons.

Railways had become central to the movement of people and commodities across colonial Nigeria. They also served the commercial and administrative priorities of British rule, connecting producing regions in the interior with major trading centres and ports.
It was within this extensive system that the new Beyer-Garratts appeared.
Why Nigeria Needed the Beyer-Garratt
The Garratt locomotive was designed to solve a difficult railway engineering problem: how to obtain substantial power without concentrating too much weight on individual axles.
Instead of mounting the entire locomotive rigidly on one conventional frame, the Garratt arrangement placed the boiler and cab between two separate powered engine units. The design distributed weight across numerous wheels and allowed the locomotive to negotiate curves more effectively than a similarly powerful rigid locomotive.
Nigeria’s new engines had the 4-6-2+2-6-4 wheel arrangement. Railway reporting in February 1936 recorded new Beyer-Garratts of this configuration being built for the Nigerian Railway by Beyer, Peacock & Co. Ltd, the Manchester locomotive manufacturer closely associated with the development of the Garratt type.
The engines were constructed to requirements associated with M. P. Sells, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Nigerian Railway, and were inspected under the Crown Agents for the Colonies.
A 1936 railway card featuring the “Emir of Katsina” explained another important feature of the Nigerian machines. Their weight was spread over twelve axles because some of the rails and bridges on the routes where they worked could not accommodate excessive axle loads.
This ability to combine power with distributed weight made the Beyer-Garratt particularly valuable in Nigeria.
The Emir of Katsina Locomotive and Muhammadu Dikko
When No. 502 was photographed in March 1936, Muhammadu Dikko occupied the Katsina throne.
Dikko served as Emir of Katsina from 1906 until 1944. His long reign coincided with the consolidation of British colonial administration in northern Nigeria and major changes in transport, communications and political authority.
Historian Moses Ochonu has documented Dikko’s journeys to Britain in 1921 and 1924, episodes that reveal the emir’s engagement with the institutions and technologies of the imperial power under whose colonial system Katsina had been incorporated.
No. 502 carried the title “Emir of Katsina” on its nameplate rather than Muhammadu Dikko’s personal name. A W. D. & H. O. Wills railway publication issued in 1936 described the Nigerian Beyer-Garratts as locomotives bearing the names of Nigerian chiefs.
As Dikko was the reigning Emir of Katsina when No. 502 entered service, the title displayed on the locomotive was directly associated with his office and reign.
The name brought together two powerful symbols of the period: the traditional institution of the Katsina emirate and the industrial technology of the colonial railway.
What Was Nigerian Railway No. 502?
No. 502 was a Beyer-Garratt articulated steam locomotive belonging to the Nigerian Railway’s 501 Class.
Its 4-6-2+2-6-4 wheel arrangement meant that the locomotive had two articulated engine units supporting the central boiler structure. This produced the unusually long and dramatic appearance visible in surviving photographs and contemporary illustrations.
The arrangement offered practical advantages. A large boiler could supply substantial steam power, while the locomotive’s weight was distributed across a greater number of axles. The articulated units also gave the machine greater flexibility when negotiating railway curves.
The locomotive appeared as card No. 32 in W. D. & H. O. Wills Limited’s 1936 Railway Engines series. The illustration shows the engine in Nigerian Government Railway livery with the number 502 visible at the front and the name “Emir of Katsina” beneath the image.
The accompanying description stated that each engine was shipped from its British manufacturer to Nigeria in three sections.
From Jebba and Minna to Lagos and Kano
The Beyer-Garratts played an important role on major sections of the Nigerian railway network.
A 1936 account stated that the locomotives were used on the Jebba to Minna section during approximately six months of the heavy export season. For the remainder of the year, they were employed on through passenger workings between Lagos and Kano, a journey described at the time as approximately 700 miles.
The Annual Report on the Social and Economic Progress of the People of Nigeria, 1938 recorded that Garratt locomotives of the 501 Class were giving satisfactory service on the Jebba to Minna section. They worked all trains on that section except the Limited and the Mail.

The same report recorded that a further five Garratt locomotives of the 4-6-2+2-6-4 arrangement entered service during the early months of 1938, showing the railway administration’s continuing investment in the type.
The 501 Class therefore became part of the heavy traffic and long-distance passenger operations that characterised Nigeria’s expanding railway system during the late 1930s.
African Drivers Behind the Giant Locomotives
One of the most important parts of the story concerns the men who operated the locomotives.
The 1938 colonial report recorded that the 501-Class Garratts on the Jebba to Minna section were crewed by African drivers and were providing satisfactory service.
A 1936 description of the locomotives likewise stated that the Nigerian Garratts were handled by African railway personnel.
Operating a large steam locomotive required considerable skill. Drivers needed to understand the behaviour of the engine, gradients, braking, steam pressure, water levels and the demands imposed by different train loads. Firemen maintained the fire and steam supply, while fitters, workshop workers and other railway employees kept the machinery serviceable.
The 1938 report also recorded continued apprentice training for locomotive work and for carriage and wagon fitting.
Although the locomotives were designed and manufactured in Britain, their working lives in Nigeria depended heavily on African railway labour. Drivers, firemen, apprentices, fitters and workshop staff were essential to keeping the network functioning.
More Than an Impressive Steam Engine
The Emir of Katsina Locomotive represents several histories at once.
It belongs to the history of railway engineering, particularly the international success of the Beyer-Garratt design. It also belongs to the history of Nigeria’s colonial transport system, which connected distant regions while serving administrative and commercial objectives.
Its name connects the railway with Muhammadu Dikko and the institution of the Katsina emirate. Its operation connects the machine with African drivers, firemen, apprentices and workshop employees whose labour was essential to the railway.

Colonial railway construction was closely tied to British administrative and commercial interests. At the same time, Nigerians became indispensable participants in its daily operation and used the network for employment, trade, movement and communication.
No. 502 therefore represents far more than an impressive example of steam engineering. It provides a window into the political, economic and social transformations taking place across Nigeria during the colonial period.
Conclusion
Nigerian Railway No. 502, “Emir of Katsina”, was a striking product of the railway transformation taking place in colonial Nigeria during the 1930s.
Photographed by Edward Harland Duckworth on 5 March 1936, the locomotive belonged to the powerful 4-6-2+2-6-4 Beyer-Garratt type built for the Nigerian Railway. Its class served the Jebba to Minna route and also worked through passenger services between Lagos and Kano.
At the same time, Muhammadu Dikko occupied the Katsina emirship whose title appeared on No. 502. Behind the locomotive’s engineering and prestigious name stood another essential part of its history: African railwaymen who operated and maintained the Garratts on Nigerian tracks.
No. 502 remains a compelling symbol of a period when traditional authority, colonial infrastructure, industrial engineering and African technical labour met on the same railway.

No. 502 represented sophisticated railway engineering, while its name linked industrial machinery to the institution of the Katsina emirate during Muhammadu Dikko’s reign.
