Kayode Fayemi was born on February 9, 1965 in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Though born in Ibadan, he is originally from Isan-Ekiti in Ekiti State, a community known for producing many prominent scholars and public leaders.
Fayemi grew up in a period when Nigeria was undergoing major political transitions. Pro Democracy Activism During Military Rule
During the 1990s, Nigeria was under military rule, particularly during the regime of General Sani Abacha. The annulment of the 1993 presidential election triggered a nationwide struggle for democracy.
Fayemi became deeply involved in the pro democracy movement resisting military dictatorship. Because of the dangers faced by activists at the time, he spent periods in exile in the United Kingdom.
While abroad, he played a key role in organizing opposition media networks that broadcast pro democracy messages into Nigeria. These networks included Radio Freedom, Radio Democracy International, and Radio Kudirat, which helped mobilize resistance against military rule and kept the international community informed about political developments in Nigeria.
His experiences during this period were later documented in his book Out of the Shadows: Exile and the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy in Nigeria, which reflects on the challenges faced by democracy activists during military rule.
Building Institutions for Democracy
After Nigeria returned to civilian rule in 1999, Fayemi focused on strengthening democratic institutions and governance structures.
He became the founding director of the Centre for Democracy and Development. The organization was created to promote democratic governance, peacebuilding, and security sector reform across West Africa.
Through the Centre for Democracy and Development, Fayemi worked with civil society groups, policy experts, and governments to support democratic reforms and election monitoring across the region.
His work in governance research and policy development earned him recognition as one of Nigeria’s leading public intellectuals in the field of democracy and security studies.
Entry Into Electoral Politics
Fayemi entered electoral politics in 2007 when he contested the Ekiti State governorship election under the Action Congress of Nigeria.
Although the official results initially declared another candidate the winner, Fayemi challenged the election outcome in court. After several years of legal proceedings, the Court of Appeal overturned the result in October 2010 and declared him the rightful winner of the election.
He was sworn in as Governor of Ekiti State on October 16, 2010.
First Term as Governor of Ekiti State
During his first term from 2010 to 2014, Fayemi introduced several policies aimed at improving social welfare, education, and infrastructure.
His administration launched social security programs for elderly citizens and expanded access to education through investments in school infrastructure and learning facilities. Road construction and rural development projects were also initiated to improve connectivity across the state.
Despite these initiatives, he lost the 2014 governorship election to Ayodele Fayose.
Minister of Solid Minerals Development
In 2015, Fayemi was appointed Minister of Solid Minerals Development by President Muhammadu Buhari.
During his tenure, he worked to reposition Nigeria’s mining sector as an alternative source of economic growth. His policies focused on improving regulation, encouraging investment in mineral exploration, and formalizing artisanal mining operations.
The reforms were part of broader efforts to diversify Nigeria’s economy beyond crude oil.
Second Term as Governor
Fayemi returned to Ekiti politics in 2018 and contested the governorship election again. He won the election and began a second term as governor.
During this period he also served as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, where he coordinated discussions among state governors on national policy issues.
