Lagos Government Railway No. 101 occupies a distinctive place in the history of Nigerian rail transport. Built by the Hunslet Engine Company in Leeds in 1901, it belonged to an original group of three articulated steam locomotives supplied for the Lagos Steam Tramway, a narrow gauge urban railway created to connect Lagos Island with the Lagos Government Railway terminus at Iddo.
The locomotive looked unlike the conventional steam engines that would become familiar on Nigeria’s main railway network. Its unusual articulated construction reflected the physical demands of early twentieth-century Lagos, where narrow streets, sharp curves and restrictions on Carter Bridge required a small and flexible machine.
No. 101 was therefore more than an unusual locomotive. It belonged to an ambitious colonial transport system that linked the commercial centre and waterfront of Lagos with a railway extending inland through Abeokuta to Ibadan.
Lagos Government Railway No. 101 and the Birth of the Lagos Railway
The story of Lagos Government Railway No. 101 begins with the construction of the railway from Lagos towards the interior.
Work on the Lagos to Ibadan railway began in December 1895. The completed route opened for traffic on 4 March 1901. Its length was approximately 122½ miles, and its construction cost was about £1 million.
The railway transformed connections between Lagos, Abeokuta and Ibadan. Agricultural produce could move towards the coast more efficiently, while imported goods could be carried inland by rail.
There was, however, an important geographical problem.

The railway terminus was at Iddo, separated from the commercial heart of Lagos Island. Passengers and goods arriving at the railhead still needed an effective connection into Lagos itself.
Colonial authorities therefore developed a light tramway that would run between Lagos and Iddo, crossing Carter Bridge.
Unlike the main Lagos Government Railway, which used a gauge of 3 ft 6 in, the new Lagos Steam Tramway was built to the much narrower gauge of 2 ft 6 in, or 762 mm.
No. 101 was consequently not an ordinary locomotive of the Lagos to Ibadan main line. Although operated within the Lagos Government Railway system, it was constructed for a separate and highly specialised urban service.
Three Unusual Locomotives Arrive from Leeds
Motive power for the new tramway came from the Hunslet works in Leeds, one of Britain’s important manufacturers of industrial and narrow gauge locomotives.
The original three engines carried Hunslet works numbers 751, 752 and 753 and became Lagos Government Railway Nos. 101, 102 and 103.
They were delivered to Lagos in September 1901, several months before the tramway opened for public traffic.
The locomotives were associated with a design developed through the Crown Agents for the Colonies and manufactured by Hunslet for the demanding conditions of the Lagos route.
Their arrival represented an important stage in preparations for an urban transport system unlike the heavier main line railway extending inland from Lagos.
Why No. 101 Looked So Unusual
Photographs of No. 101 reveal a machine that does not resemble a standard railway tank engine.
The powered locomotive section was connected to a trailing four-wheel portion containing an enclosed, van-like compartment. Together they formed an articulated vehicle capable of negotiating the difficult tramway alignment.
Published locomotive specifications record outside cylinders measuring approximately 6¼ inches by 8 inches, with driving wheels about 1 ft 6½ inches in diameter.
Those dimensions underline how small the engines were compared with main line railway locomotives.
Their size was deliberate.
The tramway had to operate through an urban environment containing extremely sharp curves, some with a radius of approximately 80 feet. Carter Bridge also imposed a severe five-ton loading restriction.
The trailing bogie helped distribute the locomotive’s weight and allowed the articulated vehicle to meet the physical demands of the route.
This combination of bridge restrictions, narrow gauge track and tight urban curvature produced one of the most recognisable locomotive designs associated with early Nigerian railway history.
The Lagos Steam Tramway Opens in 1902
The Lagos Steam Tramway formally entered public service towards the end of May 1902. Railway histories give 23 May 1902 as the opening date.
The new service connected Lagos with the railway terminus at Iddo and facilitated the movement of both people and merchandise.
Almost immediately, however, the tramway faced disruption.
Carter Bridge required substantial repairs. The closure of the bridge temporarily prevented the tramway from reaching Iddo, forcing services for a period to operate only within Lagos town.
Despite the interruption, the tramcars increasingly became part of the city’s transport network.

The episode demonstrated how closely the usefulness of the tramway depended upon Carter Bridge. Without the bridge, the intended connection between Lagos Island and the Iddo railway terminus could not operate as planned.
Carrying Passengers and Goods Through Colonial Lagos
The Lagos Steam Tramway was not simply an early passenger service.
It also formed part of the commercial infrastructure connecting Lagos’s railway, wharves and trading districts.
The line ran through important areas of the colonial city and connected with facilities used for the transfer of goods. Passengers arriving by railway from places such as Abeokuta and Ibadan could continue towards Lagos Island, while merchandise could be moved between the railway and waterfront.
The single-track system incorporated seven passing loops and sidings serving railway, government and commercial facilities.
The tramway therefore functioned as the final urban link in a much larger transport chain.
Produce from the interior could travel by rail towards Lagos and onward towards maritime trade. Imported goods arriving through Lagos could move in the opposite direction.
The tramway also operated within the wider political and social geography of colonial Lagos. Its route and development intersected with patterns of administration, commerce, residence and segregation that shaped the colonial city during the early twentieth century.
The system should therefore be understood both as an engineering development and as infrastructure created within the economic and political structures of British colonial rule.
The Mystery Behind No. 101’s Rear Compartment
One feature of Lagos Government Railway No. 101 has generated particular curiosity: the enclosed compartment forming part of its articulated rear section.
Its exact original purpose has never been conclusively established.
One suggestion was that the compartment could accommodate the Governor or other senior colonial officials. Another possibility was that it was intended to carry money, valuables or secure consignments.
The presence of shelving also led to the suggestion that it was used for parcels or mail.
The association with mail and parcels fits the tramway’s connections with railway and postal facilities, although the compartment may have served more than one purpose during its working life.
Its uncertain function remains one of the most intriguing features of No. 101 and contributes to the distinctive character of the locomotive.
Two More Hunslet Locomotives Follow in 1910
The original three articulated engines were not the end of the design.
In 1910, two additional locomotives were supplied for the Lagos system. They became Lagos Government Railway Nos. 104 and 105 and carried Hunslet works numbers 1016 and 1017.
The later engines followed the same general concept while incorporating modifications, including greater water capacity.
Their arrival showed that the articulated locomotive arrangement remained useful enough for the railway administration to order additional examples several years after the original three had entered service.
By then the Lagos Steam Tramway had been operating for almost a decade and had become an established part of the city’s transport infrastructure.
The End of Passenger Tram Services
The public steam tramway had a relatively short operational life.
By 1913, the government faced increasing expenditure and ageing rolling stock. Passenger operations ended at the close of 31 December 1913, with the closure taking effect on 1 January 1914.
This did not mean that all tramway activity immediately disappeared from Lagos.
A separate Lagos Sanitary Tramway, established in 1906 for sanitary operations, continued working after the public passenger service had ended.
The sanitary tramway was used in connection with the removal and transportation of refuse and other municipal sanitation work. It remained in operation until 1933, nearly two decades after the public steam passenger service disappeared.
The two systems therefore occupied overlapping but distinct places in Lagos transport history. The Lagos Steam Tramway provided passenger and commercial transport, while the sanitary tramway continued serving municipal purposes long afterwards.
The Hunslet Name and the 1901 Locomotive
The company that produced No. 101 had already developed an important reputation for specialised industrial locomotives.
The Hunslet locomotive business was established in Leeds in 1864 and became particularly associated with rugged locomotives designed for industrial, quarry and narrow gauge railway operations.
When No. 101 and its two sister locomotives were built in 1901, the enterprise had not yet adopted the limited company status under which it would later become widely known.
The business was reorganised as a private limited company in 1902, with The Hunslet Engine Company Limited incorporated on 15 November 1902.
For the locomotive as it existed in 1901, the historically appropriate description is therefore Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds.
Its ability to produce machines for unusual operating environments made Hunslet particularly suited to the Lagos commission, where conventional railway locomotive design was inadequate for the demands of the tramway.
What Remains of No. 101
No preserved example of the five articulated Hunslet tram locomotives is known to survive.
Their disappearance makes surviving photographs and railway documentation especially valuable. Those records preserve the appearance of an unusual class of locomotive created for a very specific urban environment.
The story of No. 101 also reveals how railway development in colonial Nigeria extended beyond the great main line routes.
Lagos required something different. The railway terminated at Iddo, while commerce, government activity and much of the urban population were concentrated across the water on Lagos Island.
Connecting those spaces required a smaller railway capable of operating across Carter Bridge and through Lagos streets.
The answer was the Lagos Steam Tramway and specialised locomotives such as No. 101.
The system belonged to a period when railway construction was fundamentally reshaping movement between Lagos and the Nigerian interior. The tramway extended that transformation into the urban heart of the colonial capital.

Conclusion
Lagos Government Railway No. 101 was one of the most distinctive locomotives to operate in early twentieth-century Nigeria.
Built by the Hunslet Engine Company in Leeds in 1901, it was one of three original articulated locomotives, Nos. 101 to 103, delivered for the narrow gauge Lagos Steam Tramway. The engines reached Lagos in September 1901, and the tramway opened to public traffic towards the end of May 1902.
No. 101 was not an ordinary locomotive of the Lagos to Ibadan main line. Its unusual configuration reflected the specialised conditions of an urban tramway that had to negotiate tight curves, operate on 2 ft 6 in gauge track and cross Carter Bridge under strict loading restrictions.
It helped connect Lagos Island with Iddo, linking passengers, merchandise, railway facilities and the waterfront during an important period in the development of the city’s transport network.
Two further articulated locomotives followed in 1910. Passenger services ended at the beginning of 1914, while the separate sanitary tramway continued until 1933.
Although No. 101 itself has disappeared, its photographs and documentary history preserve an extraordinary chapter in Nigerian transport history: a period when the distinctive geography of Lagos demanded an equally unusual railway solution.

The story of Lagos Government Railway No. 101 shows how transport history is shaped as much by geography as by technology. The locomotive’s unusual articulated design was created for the particular challenges of Lagos, including narrow gauge track, sharp urban curves, Carter Bridge and the need to connect the railway terminus at Iddo with Lagos Island.
