Rise in Academia

Onu began his academic career at the University of Port Harcourt. As one of the early leaders in the Faculty of Engineering, he became the pioneer head of the Department of Chemical Engineering. He took on responsibilities that shaped the young department’s identity, developing the curriculum and guiding the academic direction of the faculty.

He later became acting dean of the Faculty of Engineering and also served on the university’s governing council. Throughout his time in academia, he was known for his commitment to teaching, mentoring and laying a strong foundation for Nigeria’s engineering education. Many students who passed through his classroom went on to contribute to the nation’s industry, research and public service.

Political Beginnings and Governorship of Abia State

By the early 1990s, Onu made the transition from academia to politics. He contested the 1991 gubernatorial election in Abia State under the National Republican Convention and won. In January 1992, he became the first civilian governor of the newly created state. His administration operated during the Third Republic and was responsible for establishing key administrative structures during the state’s formative years.

His time in office came to an end in November 1993 when the military government dissolved elected civilian administrations nationwide. Despite its brevity, his governorship remains a notable period in the early development of Abia State and reflects his early involvement in shaping Nigeria’s democratic aspirations.

Influence in National Politics

After Nigeria returned to democratic governance in 1999, Onu continued to play an active role in national politics. He was selected as the presidential candidate of the All People’s Party before a coalition arrangement produced a joint presidential ticket. His political journey continued to evolve over the years.

In 2010, he became national chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party. During this period, he was part of the negotiations that brought major opposition parties together into a single political platform, resulting in the formation of the All Progressives Congress in 2013. This development marked a turning point in the nation’s political landscape and contributed to the rise of a major political force in contemporary Nigeria.

Ministerial Leadership in Science and Technology

In November 2015, Onu was appointed Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation by President Muhammadu Buhari. He served in this position until 2022 and became known for his focus on strengthening the role of science and innovation in Nigeria’s national development.

He championed the promotion of home grown technological solutions, supported research institutions and encouraged wider participation in scientific thinking. He advocated strongly for Nigeria to believe in its potential and for young people to engage in scientific discovery, innovation and entrepreneurship. Public programmes under his ministry highlighted the role of science as a foundation for national progress.

Presidential Aspirations and Later Public Life

In 2022, Onu resigned from his ministerial role to pursue the presidential nomination of the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2023 general elections. Although the nomination went to another aspirant, his participation reflected more than three decades of commitment to national service.

In the following years, he continued to be regarded as an elder statesman and an influential voice in political and scientific discussions. His contributions remained visible in conversations about governance, innovation and national development.

Ogbonnaya Onu passed away on 11 April 2024 in Abuja at the age of 72. His passing drew tributes from across Nigeria. Leaders, colleagues and institutions praised his integrity, calm demeanour and lifelong dedication to education, science and governance.
