Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso was born on 21 October 1956 in Kwankwaso village, Madobi Local Government Area, Kano State, Nigeria. He grew up in a Sunni Muslim Fulani family rooted in local leadership. His father served as Sarkin Fulani (village head) and later as District Head of Madobi. These early experiences nurtured in him a sense of duty, dignity, and service to community that shaped his life’s work.
Education and Formation
Kwankwaso’s schooling began in his hometown. He attended Kwankwaso Primary School, Gwarzo Boarding Senior Primary School, Wudil Craft School, and Kano Technical College, building a foundation in science and technical studies.

He studied civil engineering at Kaduna Polytechnic, earning a National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND). He served in leadership roles within the Kano State Students Association, foreshadowing his future public service.

Between 1982 and 1983, he attended Middlesex Polytechnic in the United Kingdom, and later earned a Master’s degree in Water Engineering from Loughborough University of Technology in 1985. In 2022, he was awarded a Ph.D. in Water Engineering from Sharda University in India.
Early Career and Entry Into Politics
After completing his education, Kwankwaso began his professional career in 1975 at the Kano State Water Resources and Engineering Construction Agency (WRECA). Over 17 years, he rose to Principal Engineer, gaining experience in public service and infrastructure development.
He entered politics in 1992, when he was elected Member of the House of Representatives representing the Madobi Federal Constituency under the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He also served as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives. He participated in the 1995 Constitutional Conference, contributing to Nigeria’s democratic development.
Leadership as Governor of Kano State
