Chinua Achebe International Airport, Umueri

A central achievement of Obiano’s tenure is the construction and commissioning of the Chinua Achebe International Airport at Umueri, originally called Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport, inaugurated on 30 October 2021, the airport has a 3.7-kilometre runway, one of the longest in any state-built airport in Nigeria, and it is expected to enhance cargo and passenger transport, stimulate trade, and attract investment to Anambra State.

Road and Infrastructure Projects

Obiano’s administration undertook multiple road and bridge projects across Anambra State, while exact kilometre counts and audits are not independently verified, media and government reports confirm that road and bridge construction was a priority, improving connectivity, supporting local commerce, and facilitating mobility within the state.

Administrative Reforms

The administration implemented structural and procedural reforms, including digitising project monitoring, strengthening procurement processes, and improving oversight of public funds, these reforms drew on Obiano’s banking and audit background, supporting a more organised and accountable state bureaucracy.

Controversies and Legal Proceedings

After leaving office, Obiano was arraigned in 2024 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for allegedly diverting approximately ₦4 billion from the state’s security-vote account, the case remains ongoing, highlighting challenges in post-governorship accountability and financial transparency, while the allegations are serious, Obiano has not been convicted, and the legal process is still in progress.

Legacy and Assessment

Obiano’s legacy is anchored primarily in tangible infrastructure projects, notably the Chinua Achebe International Airport and various road and bridge constructions, he also initiated administrative reforms that improved governance oversight, claims regarding massive scholarships, large-scale hostels, or sweeping social transformations lack independent verification, they are therefore not included in his verified legacy, the EFCC legal proceedings also underscore the importance of accountability in evaluating any political tenure, his story reflects both the possibilities of technocratic governance and the necessity for transparent stewardship of public funds.
